In 1974, Bangabandhu launched the interest-free microcredit program and took up the development project titled 'Palli Matri Kendra' to empower women. The Children Act, 1974 was enacted for the protection of children. The Father of the Nation established the Care and Protection Center for Child Development, now known as Govt. Shishu Parivar. Our government has arranged to reserve 10 seats for seniors in every child family. Currently, 226 institutions of various types are being run under the Directorate of Social Services. A total of 54 philanthropic activities of the social safety net are being implemented for the welfare and development of the poor, underprivileged children, orphans with disabilities, teenagers, women and the elderly in Bangladesh, and the welfare and development of the helpless people. Under social security program, 1 crore 15 lakh beneficiaries' allowances and grants are being delivered directly to their doorsteps through mobile financial services on a G-to-P basis.
We provide training, special allowances and educational stipends to improve the quality of life of tea workers, hijras, vedas and marginalized communities. Financial assistance is also being provided to cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, stroke, paralyzed and congenital heart disease and even burn victims. Every year millions of people are getting the necessary medical assistance through hospital social service activities. Vagrants and Destitute Persons (Rehabilitation) Act, 2011, Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2013 and Neuro-Developmental Disabilities Protection Trust Act, 2013, Parental Maintenance Act, 2013 Bangladesh Rehabilitation Council Act, 2018 and National Disability Development Foundation Act , 2023 has been enacted. Probation Act, Voluntary Social Welfare Organizations (Registration and Regulation) and Abandoned Children Protection Act and Transgender Persons Rights and Protection Act are among the achievements of this government. We have launched software to ensure the development of disabled people. Child help line 1098 (toll free) has been launched to help children, which is open 24 hours a day to help children.
A National Social Security Strategy Paper and Time-bound Action Plan have been formulated. I firmly believe that the Department of Social Services is determined to bring back all the disadvantaged people of the country to the mainstream of social development and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations and the Ministry of Social Welfare will always contribute to building Bangabandhu's dream of Sonar Bangla, free from hunger and poverty.
